Epidemiology of Allergies

Since the Industrial Revolution, the American population has been constantly hit by allergic diseases, with approximately 20% percent being suffering from them (Seité et al.,2020). The hygienic hypothesis suggests that a link between hygienic standards amongst the citizens and reduced exposure can explain the rising rates in allergy cases. Several allergies cannot be left out when we are discussing the epidemiology of allergies disease. The main categories of the allergic disease include rhinitis, drug allergy, and food allergies (Lal et al., 2020). Therefore, practitioners should understand the epidemiology of the disease and the cause to facilitate the employment of better treatment and prevention measures.

.

Several treatment measures for allergies can be recommended, but I would recommend the patient be subjected to second-generation antihistamines in this scenario. This is because they tend to be safer and more effective even when taken by the patient (Craig et al.,2020). If the patient’s other health conditions are stable, I will apply two treatment measures to help the patient get relived easily and faster than when using one step. Oral antihistamines such as loratadine can first be administered to the patient, followed by spraying that will ease or prevent allergic symptoms development.

As a nurse practitioner, I will always advise my allergic patients to, by all means, avoid situations that can lead them to be exposed to allergies. For example, suppose the patient is working. In that case, I will advise him or her to always advocate for a clean working environment, thus avoid messy and stuffy environments as much as possible. Likewise, if affected by exposure to coldness, heavy clothing will be recommended, thus avoiding such allergies as running nose caused by such cold conditions.

Allergies occur when a person’s immune system responds to allergens or foreign substances, which may cause rashes, hives, runny nose, sneezing, coughing, or scratchy throat. Severe forms of allergies can cause breathing trouble, asthma attacks, or even death. An estimated 50 million people in the United States experience various allergy types each year. With the burden of chronic diseases in the US increasing, allergies are ranked as the sixth leading cause(ACAAI, 2021). For instance, over 24 million Americans are affected by asthma, 6 million of whom are children. In 2018about 7.1 Million persons in the US reported having respiratory allergies (CDC, 2021).

The ideal treatment for this client would involve the use of second-generation antihistamines (SGAs) and nasal glucocorticosteroids. This treatment decision would be informed by the fact that SGAs are the recommended first-line therapy for allergic infections. Compared to first-generation antihistamines, SGAs provide clinical, pharmacokinetic, and pharmacodynamic advantages, which would make the client’s treatment cost-effective. According to Church (2016), a combination of SGAs and nasal corticosteroids is associated with better health outcomes than when used separately.

The patient education will include the direction on how the patient should use the medication to manage misuse. The patient will also be advised to avoid allergens, alcohol, and central nervous system depressants because of sedation. The patient will also be educated on the therapeutic effects and the side effects of the prescribed SGA. According to Saleh, Alshahrani, Alshehri & Alqurashi (2021), patients’ awareness about antihistamines and their usage remains low, necessitating patient education at the point of prescription.
