needed. You’ll have a limited amount of space to store them, and limited budgetary funds to
purchase each type of them. There will be an uncertainty of who’s coming in your facility ’s doors,
and for what conditions they need care. You’ll make your best prediction of how many will come to
your facility this year vs. last year and the year before, but those numbers won’t be exact – as
demographic and economic trends can easily influence them. Given all the uncertainty in the
healthcare environment (that’s not going to go away) – what is the best way to evaluate your
inventory management performance? How are budgetary item shortages best safeguarded against?

coordinated, and collaborative network that links various healthcare providers to provide a

Assignment #3: Discussion – Role of Health Information Systems
Health information systems (HIT) are designed to help manage the collection, processing,
standardization, and communication of data. New systems exist in health care in various
stages. Some examples are implementation, use, meaningful use, optimization, and
adoption. A simple overview of health information systems in hospitals are source systems,
clinical EHR systems, supporting infrastructure, and connectivity systems. Data received from
these systems provide statistics of different populations to include mortality and morbidi ty
rates, size of the population, and vital statistics. Health information can provide surveillance
to further advise how specific events or notifiable diseases affect a specific group of people,
in a specific area, and at what rate.
For this discussion:
1. Discuss the disparities among racial and ethnic minority populations regarding the
adoption of health information technology.
2. Describe some utilization, technical, practical, and human challenges of HIT.
3. Discuss how health information systems can improve the health care system.
