Pros and Cons of Managed Care in America
Managed healthcare is a system utilized in America to provide individuals with health
insurance and reduce the cost of care. Examples of these plans include PPOs, HMOs, and POS.
A benefit of having managed care in America is meeting healthcare needs and making
them more affordable and accessible. Without any insurance, the average person could not afford
health care costs. Additionally, it allows individuals to still receive quality care and not settle
only for what they could afford without one of these plans. Another advantage of having
managed care plans in America is patients’ information can be easily accessible to other
providers they wish to see. Without these plans’ patients would be responsible for bringing their
medical records to other providers they are being seen. If these papers were lost or forgotten,
authorization would have to be granted to access. These easy mishaps are much less likely when
seeing doctors within a network. Medical records can be transferred to other providers without
worry when in-network.
A disadvantage of managed care in America is it is still not affordable for everyone.
However, approximately 3/4 of Americans have insurance coverage while 25% of Americans do
not. Thus, making that 25% have much more restricted access to healthcare. It is common for
sick individuals who do not have insurance to push off any symptoms they may be experiencing
and/or wait until they have no choice but to seek medical attention through a hospital. In
America, nobody can be declined care at an emergency room.
